Duncan Aviation announced on Mar. 25 the establishment of the J. Robert Duncan Endowed Professorship of Technical Operations at Western Michigan University’s College of Aviation, marking the college’s first endowed professorship.

The announcement highlights a significant investment in aviation education, aiming to prepare students for technical leadership roles amid rapid industry changes. The new faculty position will focus on advancing education, research and leadership in aviation technical operations.

“Duncan Aviation is thrilled to collaborate with Western Michigan University’s College of Aviation,” said Andy Richards, chief operating officer of Duncan Aviation’s Michigan operations. “WMU’s aviation program is recognized internationally for its leadership in aviation education and serves as an essential element in Duncan Aviation’s talent pipeline.”

Dr. Raymond Thompson, dean of the College of Aviation, said, “This is a meaningful investment in our students and our college. Duncan Aviation understands the strength of this industry depends on how well we prepare the next generation of technical operations professionals.” Thompson also said that having an endowed position allows engagement with experienced professionals who can help shape curriculum and mentor students.

The professorship will support development of new academic pathways such as a technical leadership pathway within the bachelor’s degree program, an aviation technical leadership certificate program and a future graduate program in aviation maintenance leadership. The role aims to anchor academic and industry leadership at WMU by preparing graduates with both technical expertise and management skills.

Richards said, “Despite being a highly technical field, our industry relies on the talent and passion of its people to drive progress.”

Duncan Aviation has partnered with WMU for many years through internships, scholarships and collaborative programs like summer camps. According to the official website, Western Michigan University enrolls more than 17,000 students according to the official website. The university supports inclusive excellence for all students according to the official website and emphasizes learner-focused education that is research-oriented and globally involved according to the official website. WMU also fields 16 Division I varsity sports as a Mid-American Conference member according to the official website, promotes sustainability through LEED-certified buildings according to the official website, and has earned top-100 rankings for several graduate programs nationally according to the official website.

The creation of this professorship positions WMU’s College of Aviation—recognized among top flight schools—to respond effectively to evolving demands within global aviation.
