Kalamazoo Announces Three Finalists for City Attorney

The City of Kalamazoo has selected three finalists for the position of Kalamazoo City Attorney.  The candidates will be introduced to the public at a meet and greet from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the Community Room at Kalamazoo City Hall.

The three finalists are William Kim, Julianne Pastula, and James Porter.  Interviews for the three finalists are scheduled with the Kalamazoo City Commission at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in the City Commission Chambers at Kalamazoo City Hall.  All three interviews are open to the public.  The Kalamazoo City Commission will hold a special meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in the City Commission Chambers for the purpose of conducting the interviews.

The interview with James Porter will take place at 9 a.m.  Porter is the in-house counsel for Oshtemo Charter Township and has practiced law in the communities surrounding Kalamazoo for multiple townships.  Before joining Oshtemo Township, he practiced municipal law as a partner in the Kalamazoo law firm of Bauckham, Sparks, P.C.

The interview with William Kim will take place at 10:30 a.m.  Kim currently is the city attorney for the City of Flint in Flint, Michigan, and leads the attorneys and staff for the City of Flint’s Law Department.  Kim’s prior experience includes serving as an assistant city attorney for the City of Lansing.  He also has served as a civil litigator, defending cases in state and federal court.

Julianne Pastula’s interview will take place at 1 p.m.  Pastula is the chief legal counsel of operations for the City of Detroit Law Department where among her responsibilities include advising and counseling the City of Detroit’s Board of Ethics.  Pastula also previously served as general counsel to the Michigan Independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission.

The City Attorney is hired by the Kalamazoo City Commission to serve as the lead Attorney for the City.  The City Attorney’s work is performed directly under the executive direction of the City Commission and provides legal guidance to the Commission and all City of Kalamazoo departments.  The finalists are vying for the position to replace current city attorney Clyde Robinson who is retiring.  Robinson joined the City of Kalamazoo as city attorney in 2008.
