A Kalamazoo Institute of Arts exhibition inspired by African art explores how artists of varying cultures and perspectives have been inspired by the ideas, truths and myths surrounding the continent’s art.
The exhibition, “Africa, Imagined: Reflections on Modern and Contemporary Art,” opened with a virtual celebration on Jan. 22.
“Featuring mostly West African works of art spanning the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition will explore three key themes: escapism, social inquiry, and cultural reclamation,” a release about the exhibition states.
“Africa, Imagined” will be on display until May 1. Admission is free to children under the age of 12 and student tickets are only $2. Galleries will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
