Andrew McCormack was found guilty of second degree murder and tampering with evidence by a jury on March 26, following a trial that began on March 17 in Kalamazoo’s Ninth Circuit Court, according to an April 21 announcement from the Kalamazoo Township Police Department. McCormack was sentenced on April 20 to serve between 45 and 70 years for second degree murder and between 15 and 30 years for tampering with evidence.
The case relates to the June 18, 2022 death of James Travis, whose body was discovered after a house fire on Shakespeare Avenue. The incident prompted an investigation by local police and fire departments. The department said both Andrew McCormack and Shawna Kroeger were identified as responsible for Travis’s death, charged, arrested, and remain in custody without bond.
On March 24, 2025, Shawna Kroeger pled guilty to second degree murder and second degree arson before Judge Paul Bridenstine. She received sentences of between 18-30 years for murder and between 12-20 years for arson.
“The Township of Kalamazoo Police Department and the family of James Travis would like to thank the public for their assistance throughout this investigation. We also thank the assisting agencies; Michigan State Police and Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety,” said officials in their statement.
