City of Kalamazoo recently issued the following announcement.
A neighborhood-led report on deer management in the city of Kalamazoo was presented to City Commission at its Committee of the Whole meeting on February 21. The report recommends four actions to address direct issues caused by urban deer and a second phase of study to better understand the population and what deer management programs may be needed and warranted. The four recommended actions are:
- Ongoing public education and creation of an online resource regarding urban deer
- Implement a City program to remove deer carcasses
- Review of the fence ordinance for alternative fencing types
- More effective ways for reporting and addressing violations of the state’s “no feeding” law
The report does not recommend culling or any other actions to kill deer, capture deer, or sterilize deer.
