City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.
The City of Kalamazoo is currently accepting nominations for the 2020 Social Justice Youth Awards. The awards recognize Kalamazoo-area students that have demonstrated achievements in racial justice, community service, volunteerism, and leadership.
A total of seven students will be recognized by the Social Justice Youth Awards program. The City of Kalamazoo sponsors the Dr. Lewis Walker Award, which honors Dr. Walkers legacy as a trailblazer for the progression of racial equity in Kalamazoo. Six additional awards will be presented by the program sponsors: Consumers Energy, Schupan and Sons, Fifth Third Bank, Life EMS, Lodge-Dennis, and Kalamazoo Nonviolent Opponents of War. The award recipients will receive a $300 scholarship and a certificate of recognition
The awards will be presented at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 21, the day after the Martin Luther King, Jr Community-Wide Day of Service.
Nominations are accepted from adults who work with young people in any capacity, such as teachers, mentors, or coaches. Kalamazoo-area students between the ages of 12-19 are eligible for the award. Nominations are due by Friday, January 3, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
