CITY OF KALAMAZOO: City-Wide Historic Resources Inventory will Kick-off February 5

Istock 000010436389 medium

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on January 24.

The City will start a three-year-long historic resources inventory on Wednesday, February 5 with a kick-off event in the Van Deusen Room at the Central Library (315 S Rose Street) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This event will include a presentation followed by a question and answer session as well as an opportunity for interested community members to sign up to volunteer.

This city-wide historic resources inventory, Inventory Kalamazoo 2022, will include photographing and documenting the existing condition of every building in the City that is visible from the public right of way. There are an estimated 24,000 resources in the built environment of Kalamazoo.

The City’s 2025 Master Plan calls for a complete survey of historic buildings and resources to record and evaluate their condition. This evaluation will help to preserve the unique history of Kalamazoo’s structures and will inform any future consideration of historic or conservation districts. The Master Plan states “Regular study of Kalamazoo structures and neighborhoods will help ensure that areas of significance can be preserved and their history added to the already rich Kalamazoo story.” This inventory will not automatically impact any historic designation of properties but will serve as a baseline of understanding for potential historic designations and other planning projects.

This survey will also allow the City to fulfill its requirement as a Certified Local Government (CLG), which makes the City eligible to apply for grants from the Certified Local Government Grant Fund. Kalamazoo has been awarded 5 grants since 2001. The City of Kalamazoo has further obligations to the State Historic Preservation Office and the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation which will be satisfied by this survey.
