CITY OF KALAMAZOO: March 13, 2020: City of Kalamazoo Establish Local State of Emergency to Prevent Large St. Patrick's Day Gatherings

Announcement

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Mar. 13.

On March 31, the City of Kalamazoo established a local State of Emergency. This was done to aid Public Safety and First Responders in managing large crowds that are expected to gather for weekend St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

This declaration will allow KDPS to establish a police zone in areas where these celebrations are known to occur. Only verified residents in the area will be allowed inside the police zone. The police zone will include street closures and i.d. checks. Law enforcement will be taking strict enforcement of party-involved activities, per local ordinances and laws. Our local law enforcement partners will be assisting us, and in turn, we will assist them if these gatherings move to other locations.

The goal of this action is to prevent potential transmission of COVID-19 among large groups or to law enforcement and first responders, who will continue to be critical in efforts to manage the spread of the disease. Everyone is encouraged to take preventative measures and abide by guidelines provide by the CDC, State of Michigan, and Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Community Services.
