CITY OF KALAMAZOO: March 12, 2020: Non-essential City of Kalamazoo meetings will be cancelled through March 31

Announcement

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Mar. 12.

To mitigate potential risk of spreading novel coronavirus (COVID-19), all non-essential City of Kalamazoo public meetings are being cancelled through March 31. This includes meetings of advisory boards and commissions and other informational and input meetings.

The regular City Commission Business Meeting on Monday, March 16 will still take place at 7 pm at City Hall, however the 6 pm Commission-Neighborhood meeting is cancelled for that day. Meetings of the Board of Review for Assessments and the Building Board of Appeals meeting scheduled for Thursday, March 19 will also still take place as scheduled.

Members of the public who choose to attend these meetings or any public events are encouraged to take precautions to limit their exposure to illness, including avoiding close contact with other attendees. All community members are strongly encouraged to always follow established guidelines to prevent the spread of illness.

There are currently two presumed positive cases of coronavirus in the State of Michigan and no known cases in Kalamazoo County. This action is a proactive, preventative measure to limit potential exposure to members of the community. The Kalamazoo City Commission and City Administration are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with State and County health officials. These actions will be reevaluated near the end of March considering any future developments.

“Currently there are no known cases in Kalamazoo County,” noted City Manager Jim Ritsema, “but this is something that we need to take seriously. It is our hope that by taking these proactive steps we can limit exposure in our community and keep people safe and healthy.”

This action will affect scheduled meetings related to Adult-Use Marihuana and the Chapter 18 Civil Rights Ordinance Proposal. City staff are currently preparing other arrangements to share information and accept feedback so that these processes may continue moving forward. Additional information on these topics will be announced once it is available.

The City of Kalamazoo will continue to monitor developments closely with State and County Health Officials and will provide updates as needed.
