CITY OF KALAMAZOO: Foundation for Excellence Board Approves 2021 Budget

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Oct. 16.

On October 12, the Foundation for Excellence Board of Directors unanimously approved its 2021 budget, totaling $25,798,714. This includes more than $8 million for aspirational projects in addition to funds that stabilize the City budget and reduce property taxes in the City of Kalamazoo. 

If adopted by the City Commission, 2021 would see the Foundation for Excellence surpass $100 million of investment into the City of Kalamazoo since 2017, reaching a total of $121,033,407. 

The Foundation for Excellence has funded crucial projects to advance its mission to help Kalamazoo residents achieve the lives that they want for themselves and their families. These investments include:

•    Youth programs like Super Rec, All Things Possible, and Learning Hubs to help with remote learning

•    The Digital Access for All partnership to help bridge the digital divide allow students to access remote learning

•    Youth Mobility Fund to remove transportation barriers for youth pursuing new opportunities

•    Investments in streets, sidewalks, lighting, tree trimming and lead water service replacements

•    Support for local businesses in the City, including nearly immediate support during the COVID-19 pandemic 

•    Investments in new, renovated, and repaired affordable housing 

•    Prevention of tax foreclosures and title clearing in Kalamazoo's neighborhoods

•    Investment in city parks like Davis Street, Crane, Frays, Reed Street, and Rockwell

The largest areas of investment in 2021 will continue to be infrastructure ($1.78 million), affordable housing ($2.41 million), and economic development ($1.93 million). Significant investments will continue in youth development and other goal areas.
