Car theft is up 3.1%

Car 1000x667

City of Galesburg recently issued the following announcement.

Car theft is up 3.1% nationally this summer. Galesburg has seen an increase as well, especially among those who keep phones, wallets, keys, laptops, and shopping bags visible to passersby. You can take simple steps to protect your vehicle. Remove valuables, close the windows and sunroof, and keep your car locked when it’s parked in your driveway or garage. Do not keep a spare car key near the car.

Some car thieves use relay technology to receive the signal from a key inside a house and transfer it to a portable device, allowing them to unlock and drive the car. The National Police Chiefs Council recommends storing electronic keys in metal tins or protective pouches that block these devices.

If your car is stolen, call 9-1-1 right away to report the year, make, model, and color of the car as well as its license plate number and VIN. Notify your insurance carrier of the theft within 24 hours.
