Hiring Event Planned to Recruit Bus Drivers
Our district is facing a critical shortage of drivers
Every day, hundreds of students in our district arrive safely at school and home again, thanks to our school bus drivers. These special employees are often the first people our students see each morning. They have the incredible opportunity to help get each day off to a positive start. Without them, many of our families would struggle to transport their children to school and school-related events.
Our country is facing a critical shortage of bus drivers and unfortunately, that shortage is impacting us here in Michigan as well as in our district. We need to hire additional bus drivers and substitute drivers to ensure transportation doesn’t become a barrier for students and their families.
To help us recruit applicants, Kalamazoo RESA will host a virtual hiring event for school bus drivers on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 4-6 p.m. Transportation officials from Kalamazoo County school districts will be available to answer questions.
“The shortage of bus drivers is hurting students and their families,” said Kalamazoo RESA assistant superintendent Tom Zahrt. “We hope this virtual hiring event will highlight the benefits of being a bus driver and help local schools hire the drivers they need.”
Being a bus driver is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children and wants to be connected to our local community. Some positions are also part-time, making them an ideal career choice for parents or retirees who want to work a reduced schedule.
Bus drivers in Michigan are required to be 18 or older and have a commercial driver’s license, or CDL. The training is provided free of charge – an applicant needs a regular, valid driver’s license to apply, and a good driving record. Applicants must also be able to pass a criminal background check and a drug test.
Attend the virtual hiring event on Zoom here.
