Climax-Scotts Community Schools recently issued the following announcement.
The American Legion has sponsored the High School Oratorical Contest for 83 years. The purpose of the contest is to help high school students develop knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to speak clearly, intelligently, and acceptance of the responsibilities as well as the privileges of American citizenship.
The American Legion Oratorical Contest is open to all Michigan 9-12 grade students in public, parochial, private, or approved homeschool programs. Students must be United States citizens. Interested students need to complete the registration form online at www.michiganlegion.org/oratorical prior to 5:00 P.M. on November 12, 2021.
Students do not have to have a speech prepared prior to registering for the contest, they are simply indicating to department that they wish to participate in the contest. The first stage of the contests usually begins at the district level sometime in mid-December to early January. All district contests will be held before January 24, 2022. District winners will progress to their respective zone contest which will be held prior to February 7, 2022. All zone runners-up will receive $200 and zone winners will receive $500 and move on to the department contest.
The Department contest will take place on Saturday, March 5th, 2022. The following cash scholarships will be awarded:
1st place- $2,000
2nd place- $1,500
3rd- 5th place- $1,000
The Department winner will represent The Department of Michigan at the National level, which includes an all-expense-paid trip with a chaperone to Indianapolis, Indiana April 22-24, 2022. The student will receive an additional cash scholarship award of $2,000.00 for attending the Indianapolis Contest. Scholarships are presented to the three finalists in the final round of the national contests as follows:
1st place - $25,000
2nd place - $22,500
3rd place - $20,000
