Awards recognize service, volunteerism and leadership
The City of Kalamazoo is currently seeking nominations for the 2022 Social Justice Youth Awards. The awards recognize youth between the ages of 12 and 19 for community service, volunteerism, and leadership for causes that promote justice and equity for everyone.
Nominations are accepted from adults who work with youth, such as teachers, advisors, mentors, or coaches. Nominations can be submitted online, by mail, or by email through 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30 at https://www.kalamazoocity.org/mlk
The City of Kalamazoo presents one award in honor of Dr. Lewis Walker, a trailblazer for the progression of racial equity in Kalamazoo. Additional awards are also presented by the program’s sponsors: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Consumers Energy, Fifth Third Bank, Kalamazoo Non-Violent Opponents of War, Life EMS, Lodge-Dennis, and Schupan & Sons. Award recipients also receive a $300 scholarship.
The award winners will be recognized by the City Commission as part of events commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.
