The Kalamazoo Wings have hit a rough stretch, making it more important for them to have a strong remaining six weeks if they want a shot at the postseason.
The K-Wings (24-24-0-0) are riding a six-game losing streak with one chance, Feb. 25 at the Wheeling Nailers, to not end February on a sour note.
The team had hoped to take advantage of some divisional play recently to move up in the standings, but they’ve dropped the last three on the road, with two of those losses being by one goal.
At Indianapolis on Thursday, Feb. 24, the Fuel had a 2-0 advantage after two periods. The Wings closed the gap in the third, but their rally fell short.
On Friday, Feb. 25, in the first of back-to-back games at Wheeling, Kalamazoo had a 2-1 lead after one, thanks to goals by Logan Lambdin and Justin Taylor. The Nailers took charge of the second, going up 3-2. Early in the third, Tanner Sorenson scored to tie the game, but Chris Ortiz secured the win for Wheeling with 7:37 remaining.
The Wings, with 48 games behind them, hope their play heats up as the temperatures rise in March and April if they want a chance at postseason play.
Lambdin, a rookie, has the team lead in goals scored with 20, the team stats page shows.
