The Grave Issues Squad and the Historic Preservation Commission are seeking volunteers to help clean headstones in Mountain Home Cemetery (1402 West Main Street) on Sunday, August 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
This work is part of a Historic Preservation Commission project to preserve the history in Kalamazoo’s cemeteries. The “Grave Issues Squad”, is a subcommittee of the commission and seeks to assess, inventory and clean headstones in Mountain Home Cemetery.
Mountain Home Cemetery, located on West Main Street, contains the graves of many of the best-known figures from Kalamazoo’s history - from Gilmores and Upjohns to Curtenius and Allen. Mountain Home was founded in 1849 and has been managed by the City of Kalamazoo since 1940. More information about Mountain Home Cemetery is available at www.kalamazoocity.org/mountainhome
Residents who are interested in volunteering can contact the Grave Issues Squad at gravesquadkzoo@gmail.com to sign up. Volunteers will receive a confirmation email and information sheet after signing up. All materials, equipment, and instruction will be provided.
