Back in 2013, Kalamazoo County Treasurer foreclosed on the Vicksburg Paper Mill due to unpaid taxes. With the assistance of the Kalamazoo County Land Bank, the adjacent parcel was acquired. Supported by the Kalamazoo County Brownfield Authority, the Michigan Strategic Fund, and the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the County Commission approved a Transformational Brownfield Plan in 2019 – only the second Transformational Plan in Michigan.
Now, the mill is underway to become a hub for the community with restaurants, an artist's workspace, a hotel, museum, brewery, venue and concert space. Yesterday, The Mill at Vicksburg hosted members from Kalamazoo County Government for a tour of the large project.
The development of the 420,000-square-foot paper mill is in its fourth year and is expected to be complete by 2026.
