Kalamazoo residents are encouraged to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by taking part in the annual Community-Wide Day of Service on Monday, January 16. The Community-Wide Day of Service invites residents to put the teaching and philosophy of Dr. King into action by volunteering for causes that will make our community stronger and make our city a better place.
Community members can participate in any type of community service for any cause or organization that is important to them. Gryphon Place is coordinating volunteers and volunteer opportunities. Interested volunteers can view opportunities and register online at https://go.gryphon.org. Gryphon Place may also be reached by phone at (269) 381-1510 ext. 242. Volunteers may also register at Mayors’ Riverfront Park the day of the event between 8 and 9 a.m.
Mayor David Anderson will welcome volunteers with light breakfast at Mayors’ Riverfront Park at 8:30 a.m. in the Community Room at the Parks and Recreation building (251 Mills Street) before community service begins. Starting at 3:45 p.m., community members can meet at Metro Transit (530 N Rose Street) for a commemorative walk to Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park. A wreath laying ceremony will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m. with several community members speaking on the life, legacy, and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The following day, Social Justice Youth Awards will be presented to outstanding youth at the City Commission meeting on Tuesday, January 17. The awards recognize youth in our community that live Dr. King’s values, volunteering and leading causes that promote equity and justice for everyone.
