There were 8,616 students enrolled in Portage Public Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 0.2% more than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50.7% of them were boys, and 49.3% were girls.

Data also shows that most of the students were white, representing 69.8% of the Portage Public Schools total enrollment.

Portage Public Schools covers 14 schools within Kalamazoo County with its main office in Portage. Among them, Portage Central High School recorded the highest enrollment of 1,420 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
