There were 12,300 students enrolled in Kalamazoo Public Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 0.6% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50.3% of them were boys, and 49.7% were girls.

Data also shows that most of the students were African American, representing 37.7% of the Kalamazoo Public Schools total enrollment.

Kalamazoo Public Schools covers 31 schools within Kalamazoo County with its main office in Kalamazoo. Among them, Loy Norrix High School recorded the highest enrollment of 1,771 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
