Julia Haas is set to graduate with a bachelor's degree in industrial and entrepreneurial engineering and is on track to obtain her master's next year through Western Michigan University's accelerated program. Reflecting on her journey, Haas from Marine City, Michigan, credits an early assignment at Western Michigan University for solidifying her career path.

"I've always loved building things, always playing with Lego as a kid," says Haas. "Once we did the project and my team did really well, I decided it was my calling and I stuck with it."

Her undergraduate experience has been marked by numerous practical opportunities. During her second year, she won the Bronco Pitch Competition with a concept called Lux Scrub—a kitchen faucet attachment designed to make dishwashing more efficient.

"The idea was to make washing dishes easier and faster," Haas explains. Her team meticulously researched materials, costs, feasibility, and competition while also forecasting sales over several years.

Another significant project paired Haas with students from Western's product design program under the mentorship of a designer from Bissell. Together, they created an accessible walker featuring adjustable handles and lighting to prevent falls at night.

"It was nice having students from both disciplines," says Haas. "It was great to come in with our ideas...and get their input on how to make products innovative and aesthetic."

Haas' senior design project involved solving a scheduling challenge for the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids by developing a uniform room reservation system.

Looking ahead, Haas anticipates an internship this summer with Perrigo after spending two years as a quality engineer intern at Battle Creek Equipment. There, she applied classroom knowledge in forecasting product sales and analyzing customer feedback.

"I was able to translate what I learned in my classes by forecasting product sales," she notes. This experience has equipped her for her upcoming role as a production engineering intern at Perrigo.

Reflecting on her education, Haas emphasizes the value of hands-on learning: "Getting that outside experience...is a huge advantage." She adds that employers appreciate graduates who have practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
