Western Michigan University is reaffirming its commitment to the community through its partnership with the United Way of South Central Michigan (UWSCMI). Launching Tuesday, Sept. 17, the campaign supports critical programs that benefit the greater Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson and Lansing regions.

Through an easy-to-use online portal or by submitting written forms, Western faculty, staff and students can contribute to this initiative. To request a form, email Courtney Arnold or call (269) 387-2072. Donations and forms are due by Thursday, Oct. 31.

“We take pride in Western’s deep commitment to giving back, which extends far beyond the campus boundaries and helps those in the surrounding communities. The United Way campaign offers a powerful opportunity to support the causes that resonate with each of us. When we show up to give our time or resources, we can make a lasting impact,” says President Edward Montgomery. “Let’s demonstrate how powerful we are collectively by coming together for the United Way–and for our neighbors.”

In recent years, Western’s contributions have increased following the 2022 merger of United Way of the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region, United Way of Jackson County, and Capital Area United Way.

The people of this University—staff, students, leaders and families—consistently demonstrate their generous, caring commitment to making our community better. That Bronco spirit means children are fed, families are housed and people have what they need to thrive. All of us at United Way are grateful,” says Chris Sargent, UWSCMI president and CEO.

From April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, UWSCMI’s efforts resulted in nearly $24 million in local and regional impact. Learn more about the organization’s achievements in its 2023-24 report.

Western has partnered with the United Way for over two decades becoming a top donor in Kalamazoo. While the campaign was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic WMU relaunched its drive in 2023 and is continuing its efforts in 2024.
