Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) are set to host an annual symposium celebrating literacy. The event will take place on Friday, December 13, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at WMU's Fetzer Center. This year's theme, "50 Years of Empowerment Through Literacy," marks the KLC's 50th anniversary.
The symposium will feature sessions and workshops focused on strategies for adult learners in areas such as multigenerational learning, digital skills, and goal setting. Interested participants must register by Friday, November 22.
Michael Evans, KLC executive director, stated, "We are dedicated to advancing literacy initiatives that empower our communities. Individuals gather here to share insights, practices and strategies that foster a culture of literacy, which transforms lives and strengthens our society."
Lisa Garcia, Western’s assistant vice president for external partnerships, commented on the event's significance: “The symposium not only facilitates essential discussions among educators and community members but also highlights our commitment to fostering partnerships that drive meaningful change.”
The event encourages in-person attendance but offers a virtual option as well. Participants will receive refreshments and a boxed lunch, with opportunities to earn State Continuing Education Clock Hours.
The KLC is committed to improving literacy among adults in Kalamazoo County through free programs aimed at enhancing basic skills. These include tutoring in English as a second language, parent literacy, health literacy, digital skills, job opportunities, and more.
