Western Michigan University (WMU) has announced the closure of all its campuses for a second consecutive day due to severe freezing temperatures and snow. The university stated that except for essential services, there will be no classes on Wednesday, January 22.
Despite the weather conditions, the men's basketball game against Northern Illinois University is set to proceed as scheduled at 7 p.m. in University Arena on Tuesday, January 21.
The university has advised students and staff to check the events calendar for updates on cancellations or changes in event schedules. Event organizers are expected to update their postings accordingly.
Regarding campus services, Dining Services will keep the Valley Dining Center and Student Center Dining open with regular hours on Wednesday. However, Campus Cafes and food retail operations within the WMU Student Center will remain closed. The Sindecuse Health Center and pharmacy will operate from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., while all University Libraries locations and the Student Recreation Center will be closed.
The WMU Student Center will be accessible from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., with PNC Bank also open during these hours.
This closure adds to WMU's history of weather-related disruptions dating back to 1999. Notable instances include closures due to heavy snowfall in January 1999, ice storms in December 2006, and multiple instances of extreme cold and snow throughout recent years.
