Dr. Kristen E. Salomonson has assumed the role of associate vice president for enrollment management at Western Michigan University (WMU), effective January 21. With 17 years of experience in higher education, Salomonson was previously the dean of enrollment services at Ferris State University.

Salomonson's career is marked by her commitment to student success and a data-driven approach to enrollment growth. Her expertise includes financial aid optimization, strategic planning, and leading large teams. At Ferris State, she managed over 70 staff across various departments and led initiatives to enhance recruitment and retention.

A native of Michigan, Salomonson holds a Ph.D., master's, and bachelor's degrees in communication from Michigan State University. This background equips her with analytical skills and the ability to build relationships with students, families, and colleagues—qualities aligned with WMU’s mission.

Her holistic approach to enrollment reflects an understanding of students' needs and connecting them with resources. "What excites me about Western is the opportunity to help students find the best fit for them," she said. She values WMU's commitment to supporting students throughout their academic journey.

Salomonson cited alignment between her values and WMU’s mission as key factors in joining the university. “Western sets students up for success," she stated, expressing enthusiasm about joining an institution committed to providing necessary tools for student thriving.

She also sees Kalamazoo as conducive to fostering growth: “There’s a sense of promise and opportunity in Kalamazoo."

Recognizing challenges in higher education today, particularly in Michigan and the Midwest, Salomonson emphasized thoughtful connections with students and families. "The institutions that will thrive are those that make it clear we are here to support them," she noted.

She believes WMU's collaborative culture will build on recent successes like its first enrollment increase in a decade amid competitive markets, alongside record retention and graduation rates.

“Western has had a strong fall semester," she added, confident that this momentum will continue due to the talented team committed to student success.
