Western Michigan University (WMU) announced that all its campuses will close at 6 p.m. today due to severe winter weather conditions, with the exception of essential services. This decision affects classes scheduled for 6 p.m. or later, which are now canceled.

The university advises checking the events calendar for updates on specific events, as organizers are expected to update their postings regarding cancellations or transitions to virtual formats.

Campus facilities will adjust their hours accordingly. All University Libraries locations will close at 6 p.m., while the Student Recreation Center will shut down an hour later at 7 p.m., resulting in the cancellation of all intramural sports and sports club practices. The Climbing Wall is closed for the night. The WMU Student Center will remain open until 9 p.m.

This closure is part of a history of weather-related shutdowns at WMU dating back to 1999, when heavy snowfall delayed the start of the spring semester. Over the years, similar closures have occurred due to snowstorms, ice storms, and extreme cold temperatures affecting both WMU and other educational institutions in Michigan.
