Western Michigan University (WMU) has been recognized for its online bachelor's programs, securing a spot among the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings. WMU's online offerings have earned it a tie at No. 96 overall and No. 52 specifically for online bachelor's programs for veterans, making it the only public institution in Michigan to achieve such a ranking.

Dr. Chris Cheatham, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at WMU, commented on this achievement: "Western Michigan University strives to meet students where they are, preparing students for careers in an ever-changing world while allowing them to pursue their purpose and thrive in all aspects of their lives." He emphasized the university's commitment to providing quality experiences that align with its mission statement: "So that all may learn."

The university began offering online bachelor's degree programs in 2018. These programs were evaluated by U.S. News & World Report based on four categories: engagement, services and technologies, faculty credentials and training, and peer assessment. The publication surveyed approximately 1,800 programs for these rankings.

WMU combines advanced instructional design practices with expert faculty to deliver engaging learning experiences through its online courses. Many of these courses allow students to access recorded lectures at their convenience, supporting flexibility for nontraditional students who may be working professionals seeking career advancement or change.

According to U.S. News & World Report, their rankings consider factors beyond those typically important to teenage prospective students; they also assess how effectively programs deliver affordable degrees within a reasonable timeframe for various types of students.
