Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall issued a statement regarding Governor Gretchen Whitmer's recent announcement of her road funding initiative. Hall emphasized the efforts of House Republicans in the ongoing discussion about resolving Michigan’s road infrastructure problems.

"House Republicans have been leading the conversation on road funding since day one," Hall stated. He pointed out that dealing with road funding was his primary concern when he assumed the office of Speaker on November 8, 2024. Hall highlighted the Republicans' plan, which proposes allocating more than $3.1 billion annually for road repairs, specifically focusing on local and county roads, without increasing taxes.

Hall expressed his willingness to collaborate with Governor Whitmer, stating, “I appreciate Governor Whitmer’s joining the conversation on this issue and I look forward to working together to ensure Michigan drivers get the safe, reliable roads they deserve." He further criticized the existing situation by noting that government spending has increased by 43% since Whitmer assumed office, yet the condition of local roads remains unimproved.

The Speaker also addressed the expectations of Michigan families, insisting that, “Michigan families expect results – that’s why our plan focuses on real solutions, including prioritizing funding roads over funding corporate earmarks." He asserted that the focus should be on making the best use of the existing budget instead of creating new taxes and emphasized the necessity of repairing local roads first.

Hall concluded by welcoming the governor’s involvement and expressing hope for finding effective solutions that benefit taxpayers. "Roads and infrastructure are essential, and we must get this right," Hall remarked.
