Russ Kavalhuna, J.D., has been appointed by the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees as the institution's 10th president. Kavalhuna, currently the president of Henry Ford College, will assume his new role on July 1, 2025, following the retirement of outgoing President Edward Montgomery.

Kavalhuna brings a wealth of experience to WMU, having previously served as the executive director of flight operations at WMU's College of Aviation and as a federal prosecutor and commercial airline captain. "President-elect Kavalhuna has never chosen the easy path—only the meaningful one," remarked WMU Board of Trustees Chair Shelly Edgerton, emphasizing the leadership needed during this transformative period for higher education.

The transition to this new leadership comes at a challenging time for higher education institutions. Kavalhuna, who has been recognized for his strategic leadership at Henry Ford College, aims to build on WMU's strengths in enrollment, retention, and research activity. "Together, we are poised to journey and enter an exciting new era," stated Alan Turfe, vice chair of the board.

Kavalhuna expressed his gratitude and honor in being selected as WMU's next president. "This work is personal to me," he said. "Kalamazoo and WMU are where my journey began—not only as a student but later in the classroom." He expressed dedication to the values and mission of WMU and indicated a commitment to facing the sector's challenges. He believes his experiences, both in education and broader sectors, will aid his leadership.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointed Kavalhuna as co-chair of the Growing Michigan Together Council's Workgroup on Higher Education, tasked with supporting education in the state of Michigan. Trustee Kara Wood noted his team-oriented leadership and competitiveness as key qualities needed to further advocate for WMU. Trustee James Liggins Jr. added that Kavalhuna's experiences are instrumental in driving transformation.

Kavalhuna's professional background includes appointments to key statewide boards and roles that bridge education, law, and aviation. His commitment to public service and his advocacy for higher education position him well to lead WMU through its next chapter.

Kavalhuna will officially begin his tenure on July 1, 2025, with a five-year contract and an annual salary of $525,000.
