Two sections of roadway on the east side of Western Michigan University's Main Campus will be closed to vehicular traffic from July 28 through September 22. The closure is part of construction for the university's new pedestrian green space and gateway project, which is set to open by August 21, before fall classes begin.
The closures include Ring Road North, from the entrance to Parking Lot 48 near Ellsworth Hall to its intersection with West Michigan Avenue, and West Michigan Avenue from its intersection with Ring Road North to Ring Road South across from Kalamazoo College athletic complex.
This initiative is part of a transformation effort for West Michigan Avenue into a walkable green core. Detour signs will redirect traffic around Ring Road to the west side of campus. The closure was extended due to weather delays and additional subsurface work requirements.
Upon completion this fall, the green space will offer wide walkways, seating areas, landscaping, and a new pedestrian gateway at Ring Road North and West Michigan Avenue. Final landscaping is expected in spring 2026 with aims for Sustainable SITES Certification.
