Western Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety will partner with Kalamazoo-area law enforcement and fire departments for a multi-day active shooter response training exercise from October 15 to 17. The event will take place in Knauss Hall, which is currently not in use.

The training will feature simulated emergency scenarios intended to improve coordination and readiness among first responders. During the exercise, members of the campus community may observe police and fire vehicles as well as personnel near Knauss Hall. The university emphasized that no live weapons or ammunition will be used during the drills.

The choice of Knauss Hall, an academic building currently offline, allows for scenario-based drills without disrupting normal campus operations. Holding the exercise during fall break further reduces the impact on campus activity while providing first responders with realistic, hands-on practice opportunities.

WMU Chief of Police Scott Merlo stated, "The exercise supports the University's ongoing commitment to safety and preparedness."

WMU Public Safety is accredited for its management, operations, and support services. The department employs 31 sworn police officers and collaborates with local and regional law enforcement partners throughout the year to help maintain a secure environment.
