The University of Michigan women’s tennis team, ranked 18, is meeting a wide range of opposition as they work their way through nonconference matches.
They’ve taken on some top contenders, squeaking by No. 12 Georgia Tech 4-3 and dropping No. 4 California 5-2, but falling to second-ranked North Carolina in between, the Wolverines reported on their site. The win over California made head coach Ronni Bernstein the coach with the most wins in program history with 289 victories.
The Wolverines shut out visiting Princeton 7-0 on Feb. 20, the third time this season they haven’t let their opponent get on the scoreboard, the school reported. The match started with Michigan winning the doubles point, the first time they’ve done that since Jan. 22.
Julia Fliegner claimed her 20th singles victory of the year, winning in straight sets over Grace Joyce, 7-5, 6-3, the Wolverines reported. That win came after she and Kari Miller paired up for a 7-5 doubles win over Stephanie Schrage and Leena Bennetto.
Miller, who is No. 11 in individual rankings, had to take Victoria Hu to three sets for her 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 singles win, the Wolverines reported.
With the doubles point in hand and three singles wins, the teams elected to let the other three singles matches finish even though the match victor had been decided, the Wolverines reported.
