Western Michigan University’s food marketing program received the 2025 Impact Award for Educational Support and Learning Advancement from Progressive Grocer, according to a Dec. 15 announcement. This marks the second year in a row that the university has earned this recognition, making it the first and only university to win this award.
The recognition highlights Western Michigan University’s continued efforts in preparing students for careers in the food and consumer packaged goods industries through hands-on learning experiences. The award is part of Progressive Grocer’s Impact Awards, which honor organizations demonstrating excellence in environmental, social, and governance initiatives within the retail food sector.
Dr. Russell Zwanka, associate professor of marketing and director of the WMU food marketing program, said, “We are beyond honored to receive this award from Progressive Grocer for the second year in a row. Our food marketing program is unique with students who are fully versed in category management principles, data analytics, professional selling and sustainability. In addition, food marketing students partake in Experience-Driven Learning through opportunities like our Great Lakes Industry Tour, Food Marketing in Ireland study abroad trip, Food Marketing Association and Food Marketing Conference. To be recognized for educating future leaders in our industry is both a prestigious honor and something we take seriously each day.”
Progressive Grocer has been reporting on trends within the retail grocery industry since 1922. Its core audience includes top management at headquarters as well as key decision-makers at store level.
The WMU Career Outcomes Report indicates that all recent graduates of the program participated in experience-driven learning during their studies; all full-time employed graduates report job satisfaction; and all felt inspired by their instructors while earning their degrees.
According to the official website, Western Michigan University enrolls more than 17,000 students and fields 16 Division I varsity sports as a Mid-American Conference member. The university supports inclusive excellence for all students; promotes sustainability with LEED-certified buildings and award-winning landscaping; has earned top-100 rankings for several graduate programs nationally; and emphasizes education that is learner-focused, research-oriented and globally involved.
The opening of WMU’s Food Marketing Hub earlier this fall provides additional space for engagement with employers as well as peer connections among students—further strengthening its position within both academia and industry.
