Western Michigan University announced on Nov. 5 the launch of Western Outfitters, a cost-free boutique located in North Kohrman Hall that provides students with professional clothing to help them prepare for job interviews, internships, and other career opportunities.
The initiative aims to remove barriers for students as they transition from the classroom to the workplace by offering access to business attire at no cost. Students can select two items per academic year with proof of a professional opportunity, such as an interview invitation or event flyer. If items are returned, students may borrow additional pieces for future events. Donations from individuals connected to WMU and partnerships with local businesses like Edwards Garment, Plato’s Closet, and Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Michigan supply most of the clothing.
“Western Outfitters reflects WMU’s commitment to removing barriers to student success and to supporting students as they prepare for life beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Laura Dinehart, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Adam Manley, chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, said: “It’s been heartwarming to see everyone, from students to administration, working together to get this initiative up and running.” Manley added: “It is clear to me that we all understand the importance of making a great first impression and that students should be able to make one without breaking the bank.”
The project is supported by several campus departments including Career and Student Employment Services as well as maintenance teams who helped renovate the space. Business information systems students are developing an inventory tracking system while fashion merchandising majors will soon offer alterations on selected items.
“I’m really excited to see Western Outfitters grow, and I’m happy to offer alterations to students who need a little extra help getting the perfect fit,” said Dagny Gulledge, a student in fashion merchandising and design.
