The City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Dec. 28.
OIR Group is inviting community members to share input as part of its independent review of Kalamazoo Public Safety’s protest response this year. They will hold two community input sessions to allow experiences to be shared publicly as part of the review. The input sessions will be held on Monday, January 11 and Monday, January 25, both starting at 6 p.m.
Both sessions will be held via Zoom and streamed live to YouTube and Facebook. Community members are invited to join the Zoom webinar to share comments and experiences they wish to be considered as part of the independent review.

“This review is an important step to move our community forward,” said Dorla Bonner, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manger for the City of Kalamazoo, “and although the City of Kalamazoo doesn’t have an active role in this review, we do encourage people participate in these input sessions or contact OIR directly to share their feelings and experiences from these events.”

The City of Kalamazoo contracted with OIR Group to complete an independent assessment of Kalamazoo Public Safety’s response to protests that occurred on May 30 – June 2, 2020, and on August 15, 2020. OIR Group has extensive experience conducting police oversight and review and was chosen with input from the Citizens Public Safety Review and Appeals Board.
