Western Michigan University (WMU) has launched its 2025 United Way campaign, continuing its annual tradition of supporting local communities. The campaign, which began on October 6, carries the theme “United is the Way” and aims to encourage collective giving among faculty, staff, and students.
President Russ Kavalhuna highlighted the importance of the university’s partnership with United Way. “Western Michigan University values its longstanding partnership with the United Way, and once again this year, we are proud to collaborate on an effort that strengthens our community and ensures our neighbors have the resources they need,” Kavalhuna said. “When we come together as a campus community to support the United Way, our collective efforts far outweigh what any of us could accomplish alone.”
The university is working with the United Way of South Central Michigan (UWSCMI), which was formed in 2022 after several regional organizations merged. Between April 2024 and March 2025, UWSCMI generated nearly $25 million in impact for local communities. According to WMU, each dollar donated through this campaign results in $3.80 of impact in southwest Michigan by providing assistance for housing, food, health care, child care, and other needs.
Dr. Laura Dinehart, dean of the College of Education and Human Development and champion for WMU’s United Way Campaign, emphasized the significance of these efforts: “The United Way supports the very things that make communities strong: education, health and financial stability. I’m championing this drive because, as an educator and a member of this community, I know that when we invest in strong foundations, we make life better for everyone.”
Faculty, staff, and students can contribute online through a secure portal or by mailing a pledge form to WMU’s Office of External Partnerships. Donations are being accepted until November 10.
