Life Saving Award for Owosso City Firefighter/Paramedics Alexis Budd and Layne Little

On December 2, 2022, Owosso Township Fire Department and Owosso Fire Paramedics, Alexis Budd and Layne Little, responded to a call of a subject in seizure. Daniel Hain was at his home when he went into seizure and then cardiac arrest. Shiawassee County dispatchers, Kelsey Arbanas and Trent Burke, were on the phone with the caller who now indicated that Hain was not breathing and had no pulse.

Firefighters and Paramedics arrived to find a Danielle Hain performing CPR on her husband, Daniel Hain. Crews from both agencies immediately took over CPR and initiated Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for over 30 minutes until they were able to restore a heart rhythm and Hain was breathing on his own. The individual was loaded onto an ambulance and with the combined efforts of both agencies, a rapid emergent transport was initiated. The patient was transported to Memorial Healthcare where they were stabilized by the emergency department staff.

Once stabilized at Memorial, the same paramedics, Alexis Budd and Layne Little, transferred the subject to Sparrow Lansing for emergency cardiac catheterization. The individual was treated at Sparrow and was able to return home to his family in less than five days. He later learned that he had severe blockage in his left anterior artery, or Widow-Maker.

The combined inter-agency efforts of Shiawassee County Dispatch, Owosso Township Fire Department and Owosso City Fire Department crews, Memorial Healthcare Emergency Department and Sparrow Hospital allowed this individual to survive this incident and stand with us today.

On December 28, 2022, the Hain family stopped by Owosso Charter Township Fire Department to thank the first responders.
