Dogs in City of Portage Parks | City of Portage
Over the past year, reports from concerned citizens and observations of dogs off leash by Park staff have increased. The City of Portage Department of Parks & Recreation reminds park users that Michigan law (MCL. SEC. 287.262) states that it is unlawful “for any owner to allow any dog to stray unless properly leashed.” Portage Parks & Recreation has a rule in place which requires all dogs to be on a 6 foot or retractable leash in all parks.
It is also the responsibility of dog owners to pick up and properly dispose of dog waste within the parks. Dog waste bag dispensers and disposal bins are conveniently located throughout the Portage parks and trails system.
For owners who would like to let their dogs off leash, the South Westnedge Dog Park (9010 South Westnedge Avenue) is open year-round. Information and rules for the dog park can be found at portagemi.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/South-Westnedge-Dog-Park-26.
