Western Michigan University recently hosted its annual spring fashion show, organized by the Merchandising Opportunities and Design Association (MODA). This year's theme, "Rhythm N' Runway," highlighted the connection between music and fashion.
Fahima Mossen, a biochemistry student, modeled designer Zach Argonis' creations that were part of an event focusing on music’s influence on fashion. Olivia Bolognia, MODA president, noted that 24 student designers were allowed to explore diverse music genres and artists in their lines. "What I like about this theme is that there's so many different genres and eras of music," said Bolognia. "It's not just one consecutive style throughout, it's really just everyone designing to whatever music they like."
Held at the Delta Hotel in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the show attracted 600 attendees and was completely managed by students. The event featured various fashion lines, such as Dagney Gulledge's, which drew inspiration from the Foo Fighters, particularly their song "Everlong." "It was a combination of upcycling and from scratch," Gulledge explained about her design process.
Ella Voelks, another student designer, showcased a line inspired by Prince, recreating several of his iconic looks. "I really looked at a lot of his previous costumes that he's worn on stage and took a lot of the elements that he's used," said Voelks. Her work paid tribute to influential moments from the artist's career, including his 1984 album and film, Purple Rain.
Voelks emphasized the importance of the fashion show for her career development. "Having professional pictures of your garments is amazing, so when they're being offered to you for free on a runway it is a wonderful thing," she explained, highlighting the boost to her design portfolio.
