Western Michigan University announces recipients for 2025 fall faculty and staff awards

Western Michigan University will hold its Fall Awards Celebration on Friday, October 3, at Kirsch Auditorium in the Fetzer Center. The event, starting at 11 a.m., will honor faculty and staff for their achievements in teaching, service, scholarship, diversity, and global engagement.

President Russ Kavalhuna and Dr. Chris Cheatham, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, are scheduled to lead the ceremony. Several awards will be presented during the event.

The Make a Difference Annual Awards for 2024-25 will go to Gary Barton IV, marketing manager in the Office of Information Technology; Michael Lininger and Brax (K9 officer) from the Department of Public Safety; Cristine Thomas, program manager for the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences; and Destiny Wallace, undergraduate advisor for the Gilmore School of Music.

Distinguished Service Awards will be given to Dr. Whitney DeCamp, professor of sociology, and Dr. Lori A. Wingate, executive director of the WMU Evaluation Center.

Recipients of Distinguished Teaching Awards include Dr. Julie Apker, professor of communication, and Dr. Daniela Schröter, associate professor of public administration.

Dr. Mohamed Sultan, professor of geological and environmental sciences, is set to receive the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award.

The Emerging Scholar Award will be presented to Dr. Laiyin Zhu, associate professor of environment, geography and sustainability.

The Native American Student Organization has been selected for an Excellence in Diversity Award.

Global Engagement Awards will go to Dr. Pnina Ari-Gur, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; as well as Chef Andrew Francisco who serves as associate director of culinary operations and executive chef at WMU Dining Services.

"WMU’s Fall Awards Celebration recognizes individuals whose contributions make a significant impact across campus," said President Russ Kavalhuna during preparations for this year’s event.
