Western Michigan University (WMU) has awarded the Operation Hat Trick Visible and Invisible Wounds of War Scholarship to Liz Powers, a senior pursuing a degree in English literature and language. Powers, who transferred from Southwestern Michigan College, plans to graduate in spring 2025 and continue her education with a master's in teaching.

Powers expressed her gratitude for the scholarship, stating, "The impact this will make on my life is incredible and dearly appreciated. Being selected for the scholarship gave me an intense amount of hope and the opportunity to continue living the modest life I live without the added stress of finances for a while and continue my education at WMU."

A U.S. Navy veteran, Powers served from 2018 to 2022 as an aircraft engine maintenance specialist. After completing her service, she enrolled at Southwestern Michigan College before transferring to WMU. Her decision was influenced by WMU's military-friendly reputation and family ties; her brother David is also studying there.

Powers' motivation comes from her four-year-old son Morgan. She shared, "My son is my driving purpose in all of my endeavors... He is really my heart and soul." Her transition from military service to academia reflects her desire for greater purpose and better opportunities for her family.

WMU supports veterans through various programs like VetSuccess on Campus and recognizes them as Michigan residents concerning tuition costs. The university also offers the Military Ally Program to help faculty create supportive environments for service members.

Operation Hat Trick (OHT), a nonprofit organization supporting veterans' recovery through merchandise sales, funds this scholarship at WMU. Kenneth Franks, Western’s military advocate, acknowledged OHT's support: “The Office of Military and Veterans Affairs greatly appreciates the continued support and partnership we have with Operation Hat Trick."

Applications for the 2025 scholarship will open during the spring semester.
